New Enterprise

…. Where each new idea becomes a new business.

Get Started

The New Enterprise School recognizes that new enterprises have challenges which can be very different from those faced by established ones. Firstly, the core idea is often new and needs careful and specialist nurturing to ensure it can grow and prosper and develop the robustness required to survive within the tough and frequently changing business, social and political environments of today’s world.

Secondly, people starting new enterprises usually don’t have experience of working in this specialist situation.  You may not have experience of running or managing in any form of enterprise but even if you have worked in a larger enterprise, your knowledge and skills may not be appropriate for start-up situations.

The staff at the New Enterprise School are specialists in this area and dedicated to sharing their own knowledge and experience to ensure your enterprise will survive, prosper and become self-sustaining.

You’ll be able to

  • Validate your idea to ensure you should invest your time, effort and money
  • Develop an operational plan to organize and direct your actions and resources so that the enterprise can launch successfully and be managed effectively
  • Prepare a ‘pitch’ so that you can present your enterprise to potential backers and or customers
  • Have access to the resources you need to help you be successful
  • Become a member of a dedicated community of like-minded people

Validating a new business idea +

Validating a new business idea

Whilst all ideas may have some merit through recognition of a market opportunity or a way of resolving a long standing problem, the reality is that not all ideas can, nor indeed should, make it in the marketplace.  At this very early stage, the New Enterprise School focuses on helping to validate your idea with a view to helping you assess whether it has any reasonable chance of being successful.

The validation process looks at three critical areas:

  1. Is the idea viable at any level, i.e. does it have any possibility of succeeding?
  2. Is this the right idea for you, i.e. is this really what you want to do and can you do it?
  3. Is there enough information to make the right decisions, i.e. how far has this idea been thought through?

If the validation process can give positive answers to these three questions, it probably looks as though the idea is viable and it should move to the next stage.

Validating a new business idea is free of charge.

Developing operational business plan +

Graduate Development Programmes

Whilst many wild seeds can flourish easily by just being allowed to draw nourishment from their surroundings, this rarely happens to an early stage business idea.  To enable an idea to flourish, it needs to be placed within a carefully designed structure which will feed it the right nourishment and maintain a supportive environment around it until it has taken on a clear life of its own and with which other people and other businesses and organizations can engage.

The New Enterprise School helps at this stage by providing the means and expertise for creating a customised operational business plan for the idea. This is the structural framework within which the idea can be supported and brought to full operational activity. The school offers an option of using Sage Business Planning software at this stage in order to enable business owners to begin the automation of their business processes or of using standard spreadsheets.  The advantage of the software is that it links directly to Sage Accounts which is the widely used accounting package at the start up stage of a new enterprise.

You can choose to self-manage the development of your business plan or work with a tutor.  With both options you will have full access to all the learning resources available within the General Management School plus the specialist resources available from the New Enterprise School.  You work at your own speed whenever it is convenient for you.  Access licences are available for either 4 months or 12 months.  You can also upgrade to 12 months at any time before your 4 month licence expires for the same cost of a 4 month licence.  There are additional fees due for access to a tutor and for provision of Sage software packages.

Making a new business pitch +

Making a new business pitch

The vast majority of new enterprises require investment by other people to be able to launch. These other people might be bankers or venture capitalists or business angels providing finance to sustain the new enterprise until it is financially stable and self-sustainable. Or they might be prospective shareholders providing a different source of funds with different obligations, or they might be individuals or suppliers from whom you want suppliers or services on a contingency basis. Or they might be your first customers who require a special form of convincing to work with a new enterprise with no business track record.

These are examples and the list could be longer but they all have one thing in common – they need to be convinced that your idea and the proposition you are making is good for them and likely to be successful for you both. Learning to make a new business pitch is an essential part of starting a new enterprise; it is important to ‘pitch’ your proposal correctly.

Making a new business pitch is available only with tutor support.

With this programme you will have full access to all the learning resources available within the General Management School plus the specialist resources available from the New Enterprise School.
