Welcome to the Corporate Development facility at Marshall Gurney Institute

Our aim is to provide every organization - small, medium or large, private or public sector or social enterprise - with all the facilities and support required for developing individual or team management performance, professionalism and potential.

When joining the Institute you have four options available to you:

  1. Providing individual members of staff with access licences
  2. Providing groups or teams with access licences and setting up customized learning collaboration forums
  3. Blending the web-learning resources of the Institute with your own classroom-based programmes
  4. Uploading your own programmes for web-based delivery

Whichever option you take, you will also be granted supervisory access so that you can monitor the learning performance and achievements of all your enrolled staff.

Your staff, when enrolled can undertake self-managed, self-development where they are responsible for managing their own development progress or they can be provided with tutor support either from our faculty team or from your own organization.  In addition, they can study for Certificates of Achievement or for Certificates of Professional Development   (NOTE: tutor/mentor support required).

If you choose Professional Development your staff can also earn Credits for each completed Learning Module, which can be transferred to a higher professional award consistent with UK and International standards and which they can use to demonstrate their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Development of Individuals

All learning, and management of studies and progress, takes place in the Locus Learning Centre, our dedicated learning facility.  Here, enrolled users have unrestricted access to all the materials, tools, exercises and learning resources they need for implementing a personal self-development programme.  They also have access to our Coffee Shop where they can meet and talk with fellow students and our faculty members about any aspect of management and management development.  If you have set up any private discussion forums for your organization, your staff can also access these in the Locus, provided you authorise their access.

Newly enrolled users may find the following information useful:

A starting point.  For people new to web-based learning, getting started can sometimes be a daunting task.  We encourage all students to just browse anywhere and everywhere so that they can experience for themselves how the linking works and to discover all the different areas they have available.  They can’t break it – so they can go wherever they wish.  The Locus contains a vast quantity of individual articles, exercises, case studies, diagnostic and learning tools and much more.  Critically, these are all hyperlinked to each other wherever there is a common thread of knowledge and so users can navigate their way around the Locus simply by following the hyperlinks.  They can access all the different categories of content, or types of tools, simply by selecting any item from the menu in the Locus.  They can always access their learning history by going to the ‘My Activity’ page.  Just click on the heart symbol in the right margin

 An alternative starting point.  If you would prefer your staff to have a definite starting point rather than just browsing, we recommend they use the Diagnostic tools built into the Locus to identify their requirements and priorities.  These include:

Learning Adviser – which identifies each person's preferred learning style

On-Line Coach - which diagnoses individual requirements and priorities AND develops a recommended programme of study

To provide access to the Locus Learning Centre, it is necessary to have a Personal Access Licence for each individual staff member.  Licences must never be shared as the Locus maintains individual learning and achievement records.

Developing Groups and Teams +

Development of Groups and Teams

Arranging the development of groups and teams (we call them 'learning cohorts') is very similar to arranging the development of individuals.  Each person undergoing the development must have a Personal Access Licence.

In addition, it is necessary to set up a learning collaboration forum to which each member of the learning cohort has access and can share queries, ideas, difficulties etc and discuss these with their colleagues and their learning supervisor.

To start a cohort on its learning journey, two options are recommended:

  1. Either provide an external brief setting out the learning objectives of the project, and the timescale, or
  2. Ask the cohort to complete the On-Line Coach individually and then to pool their results to define a common set of learning objectives

The resulting set of learning objectives for the cohort can then be translated by each individual into their own Personal Development Planner.

Each individual's activities and plans can be monitored through the use of the Supervisor Access Licence which is provided as a part of the Corporate implementation package.

Blended Learning +

Blended Learning

Blended Learning has been demonstrated as having significant benefits for learners and their organizations.

"In studies contrasting blends of online and face-to-face instruction with conventional face-to-face classes, blended instruction has been found to be significantly more effective."

1. Flexibility

A blended learning approach provides ultimate flexibility in presenting content. Complex topics can be presented in the classroom, while other subject matter can be available online. An online component,  increases flexibility and convenience over how and when staff participate in learning.

2. Effectiveness

Garrison and Kanuka (and other academics) have studied blended learning. Their research concludes that “blended learning … has the proven potential to enhance both the effectiveness and efficiency of meaningful learning experiences.”

3. Efficiency

With a well-planned blended learning strategy, it is possible to efficiently and quickly deliver learning to a broad audience. And with easily accessible web storage of all learning content, the potential for re-use is huge.

4. Cost-effectiveness

Including more web-based options in learning programmes saves on travel and time diverted from work. When delivering via the web, staff and trainer/facilitator travel costs are eliminated. When the venue is a desktop/laptop/tablet/smartphone, there is clearly a saving over large rooms!

5. Personalization

Any learning that is not well implemented can create an isolating, impersonal experience. But a well-crafted blended solution can provide a seamless transition from classroom to computer or vice-versa. It is possible to design ways of continuing discussion themes and personalizing content to each individual's or team's specific job or interests.

6. Extended reach

Almost always, creating a blended learning strategy reduces classroom teaching time. By digitizing the expertise of talented instructors or subject-matter experts, it is possible to reach more people with high-quality content at a fraction of the cost. That frees up knowledgeable instructors to offer more classes, or create more training content, or work on other things.

7. Covers all learning styles

It’s always important to take learning styles into account when designing learning for adults. Effective blended learning is a “best of all worlds” solution that can help cater to all learning styles through a variety of mediums and techniques.

Uploading Own Programmes +

Uploading own Programmes

A powerful benefit of the learning platform underpinning Marshall Gurney Institute is that to construct new learning programmes, or to upload previously designed classroom programmes, it is not necessary to utilize programming tools or any other specialist technically-based learning design skills.  Learning programmes in our Institute are built by linking text, audio or video based articles, presentations, or other media formats - often currently existing in the form of programme handouts or support materials - within the automated frameworks of our platform.  The platform utilizes the inherent learning design within an existing programme and/or the natural learning design skills of the training staff.

Not all programmes are suitable for web-based delivery or for conversion to blended learning, but the majority are.  And when this conversion is done there are significant benefits in terms of flexibility, learning-effectiveness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, market reach, and accommodating differing learning styles across learning cohorts.
